“60 days. 90 days. Sometimes 180 days or more. That's how long it takes to close our deals.” Depending on the product and the size of the account, that's the reality for most sales-led B2B SaaS companies. This is where leaders come to me. “Is there a way to shorten this?” Some of that length is unavoidable—buying committees, procurement, legal review. That's just enterprise reality. Lean in… here's the good news: There is a way. Some of that length is compressible. You can have shorter sales cycles. Less cost. Higher margin. What compresses your sales cycle is product activation. Companies that get product activation right see their sales cycles compress significantly. Not marginally. Significantly. Because product activation gives something no sales demo ever can. Seeing creates familiarity. First-hand experience creates conviction. When your prospect uses your product and gets something done — something clicks in a way that no demo or white paper ever could. They start to understand what it means for them. Not because you told them. Because they experienced it themselves. In my work with B2B SaaS companies, I've uncovered one critical misunderstanding about what product activation actually is: Most teams think product activation is a webinar, a white paper, or a self-guided demo tour. But none of these are product activation. They're lead generation. And lead generation has one big gap: it doesn't tell you whether the prospect is ready to buy. Even if your sales team gets on a call with a prospect within 15 minutes of them filling out the form — that's still not product activation. In fact, if a prospect fills out a demo request form and your sales team jumps on a call within 15 minutes, that just shows there's no product activation in place. Let me show you what product activation actually looks like. In the past, one of the software purchases I was responsible for was Teachable, a learning and development platform that runs a Hybrid PLG motion. The entry point is a 7-day free trial, regardless of the size of the organization. Everyone starts the same way. No sales rep. No demo call. During those seven days, my team uploaded our training materials, built our programs, and put the platform through its paces. And then something clicked. We could see our programs delivered on an intuitive platform. Quickly. Cleanly. Without friction. Using the platform during the trial confirmed something that no demo could: we didn't need to purchase additional software to make it work. We didn't need to invest in engineering to deploy it. It was a fully developed cloud platform that was ready to go. For a company our size, that was a multi-million dollar cost saving. That was our activation moment. Product activation is the moment a prospect experiences the core value of your product on their own, before a sales rep gets involved. They go through an element of the product. Complete a workflow. Get something done that matters to them. Something valuable enough that they come back. And again. When a prospect is activated, it tells you something specific: They're not just curious. They're ready. Ready to buy. A kind of readiness that no webinar, no self-guided tour, and not even a sales team jumping on a call within 15 minutes of a form fill will ever match. Without product activation, it's just marketing sending cold leads to a sales funnel. And that's why it takes so much longer to build buying conviction. That's why it takes months to convert. The longer it takes, the more it costs. With product activation, marketing has somewhere to send prospects. Sales has a warm signal to act on. CS has usage data to track. Everything downstream depends on this one thing existing first. That's what compresses your sales cycle. Portia P.S. One actionable insight at a time for B2B SaaS leaders building a winning growth motion.
Next. Next. Next. Done. I bet you've done this too. Clicked through a product tooltip onboarding tour just to make it disappear and get on with your actual work. Pssst! Lean in and let me tell you a secret: Unashamedly, so have I. And guess who else? Many of your prospects. In my work with B2B SaaS companies making the transition from pure SLG to Hybrid PLG, I've seen this same pattern repeatedly. They build a free trial. They invest in a beautiful UX built on clean design, intuitive...
The first time Katie, my instructor, introduced the 'horse's gait,' it completely went over my head. It was my third time on a horse. The word landed, but the meaning didn't. So I made a mental note. As soon as I was done with my training, I typed those words online to find out what exactly a 'horse's gait' is. I kind of got it. Kind of didn't. It was a bit too abstract. It wasn't until a few lessons later that I literally made my horse Fred change gait — from a walk to a trot — that it all...
My grandmother hummed while standing over the stovetop. She was stirring something. Something that filled the whole kitchen with an intoxicating scent of toasted sugar and warm butter. There was a magnetic pull. I had to see what she was making. So I joined her, watching as she stirred sugar, cream and butter in a pan. The mixture slowly formed soft bubbles, deepening into a rich, golden colour. Then transforming into a deep amber. “Caramel,” she said, handing me a spoonful of the smooth,...
